A City Commission Special Meeting will be held Tuesday, August 12th starting at 5 PM. The meeting will focus on the City's group medical insurance plan and renewal for the upcoming plan year.
Florida Power & Light (FPL) is carrying out its Storm Secure Underground Program (SSUP) in Cooper City. This initiative is part of FPL’s broader effort to enhance grid resiliency by replacing overhead neighborhood power lines with underground lines, which are less susceptible to outages caused by trees, vegetation, and severe weather.
As this project progresses, the City of Cooper City is committed to ensuring residents’ concerns are heard and addressed.
Resident Concerns Regarding Power Surges
In recent weeks, many Cooper City residents have reported electrical surges that have impacted household appliances. The City Commission and staff are aware of these issues and are actively engaged with FPL to advocate on behalf of affected residents. Multiple claims, due to damaged appliances, have been submitted to FPL and the City has worked to make sure these claims are addressed as one major incident rather than isolated cases. The City has no authority over the claims process but is diligently working in support of all affected residents.
The City requests that all residents submitting their claim through the FPL claims process, also please email copies of those claims to info@CooperCity.gov. Many residents have already sent copies to Cooper City Commissioner Jeremy Katzman, and we have copies of those, and they do not need to be resubmitted.
FPL has identified infrastructure in the area that may be contributing to the surges. A crew has been tasked with assessing and addressing any contributing issues.
Additionally, the City has requested that FPL provide advance notification of any future power switchover to the new underground system. This will allow residents time to prepare and take precautions with their appliances.
Neighborhood Under-grounding Work
Residents have also expressed concerns regarding safety conditions around active construction areas. As a result, FPL has committed to the following safety measures:
Regular patrols of the SSUP project sites to ensure safety compliance.
Daily evening inspections of all Cooper City project locations.
No excavated areas will be left open overnight, and sites will be secured before the end of each workday.
FPL’s subcontractors have been instructed to respond promptly and respectfully to any resident concerns and to have English-speaking staff in all of the work areas.

Cooper City residents have a clearer way of reporting non-police and fire emergencies outside of normal business hours. Starting July 7, 2025, any urgent issue, such as water main breaks, sewer backups, major water leaks, road obstructions or downed trees, occurring outside of regular business hours (8AM- 5 PM)on weekdays, or during weekends and holidays, should be reported by calling the BSO Cooper City (non-police and fire)-emergency line at 954-435-2000. A dispatcher will ensure appropriate City personnel are alerted and dispatched.
The Utilities Department’s regular business hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. During these hours, residents should contact the department directly at 954-434-5519 for assistance with utility-related concerns and inquiries.
This enhanced process aims to streamline the response for urgent matters and ensure that issues are routed efficiently, even when the Utilities Department office is closed.
